With over 20 years of global performance experience as a clarinettist and conductor in the Royal Marines Band Service, Tom brings a wealth of expertise, energy and leadership to every musical setting. Whether coaching ensembles, providing conducting lessons or leading performances, Tom's passion for music and dedication to excellence inspire musicians to perform at their full potential on the concert platform.
He has performed in the USA, Dubai, Lithuania, Germany, Cyprus, Switzerland, Holland and France, to name but a few, and also took part in an exchange programme with the New Zealand Defence Forces. Tom replaced a clarinettist in the Royal New Zealand Navy Band for four months where he performed at various venues around the country and raised $2000 for the Starship Children's Health Charity by launching himself off Auckland City's Sky Tower!
After completing his BMus(Hons) degree and deploying to Afghanistan, Tom was selected to attend the prestigious Royal Marines Bandmasters’ course which he passed successfully in April 2016 whilst being awarded the LRSM in Musical Direction. From 2019, Tom studied conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester studying under Mark Heron and Clark Rundell, graduating with a Masters degree with Distinction in 2021.
As well as Mark and Clark, Tom has been privileged to study with Dr. Elizabeth Le Grove, Malcolm Binney, Tim Reynish, Dr. Nick Childs, Paul Patterson, Barry Forgie, Bjørn Sagstad, Russell Gray, Cynthia Johnston Turner, Sir Mark Elder, Alberto Roque, Nico Pasquet, John Wilson and Mark Wigglesworth.
Tom has led Royal Marines Bands at national events, such as the Queen's Funeral, the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and the King's Coronation, and conducted Havant Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Philharmonic, Bath Philharmonic and Nottingham Philharmonic (Choir) in public performance.
Pedagogy is something Tom's very passionate about; passing on acquired knowledge and experience for the betterment of others. Within the Royal Marines, he enjoys teaching the next generation of student conductors and, in the civilian world, he has led workshops with the Derbyshire City & County Youth Band and assisted with RNCM's Music Educators course.
He is grateful to Horndean Band, RNAS Yeovilton Band, Phoenix Brass, Hatherleigh Silver, Woodfalls Band, Poynton RBL Concert Band and Yeovil Concert Band for helping enable his journey as a conductor over the years.
Living with his wife and son near Crewkerne, Somerset, Tom likes to think of himself as an amateur barista and enjoys playing squash, running and cycling when the weather prevents him from flying as a qualfied pilot.
